DSM 7.3, Drive Compatibility and Product Direction
Synology has undergone notable ecosystem changes entering 2026, particularly around drive compatibility and system configuration.
In 2025, Synology introduced stricter drive validation across its Plus Series models, including the DS925+ and DS1825+. These initially required Synology-branded hard drives to create storage pools and RAID arrays, limiting flexibility for customers accustomed to using third-party NAS drives.
Following widespread feedback from enterprise customers, resellers and the broader NAS community, Synology revised this approach in DSM 7.3. Third-party drives are once again permitted for full use, although they are now marked as unverified within the operating system. While functionality is unaffected, this can influence purchasing decisions for less technical buyers.
Synology has also continued expanding its all-flash portfolio. The Flash Station FS200T reflects a shift toward compact, SSD-only systems designed for creative professionals and small teams that prioritise performance, low latency and quiet operation over raw capacity.
Together, these updates highlight Synology’s balance between ecosystem control and market expectations for flexibility.
